Back to Wilkes-Barre Military Volunteers

Back to Explore 19th Century Wilkes-Barre

The Wyoming Yagers, first organized at Wilkes-Barre in 1843, was composed of German residents, many of whom had received military training before migrating to this country.

On December 6, 1846, members of the Wyoming Yagers combined with the Wyoming Artillerists and left for the Mexican War. They were mustered into Federal service at Pittsburgh on December 15th and as Company I, 1st Pennsylvania Volunteers Regiment, December 31st. They mustered out in Pittsburgh July 20, 1848.

Capt. George N. Reichard, a long-time Yager, was in command when the Yagers were mustered into Federal service at the time of the American Civil War. The Wyoming Yagers were merged with the Jackson Rifles of Pittston to form Company G of the 8th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers. On April 22-24, 1861 they were transferred to Chambersburg and then Harrisburg for Federal service for 90 day service. They were mustered out at Harrisburg on July 29, 1861.
